Green Bay Woman Decapitates Lover
GREEN BAY – In the early morning hours of February 23, 2022, Tara Pakanich was woken by the sound of a storm door slamming and then a vehicle. She got out of bed and noticed the basement light was on. She went into the basement, but didn’t see anyone. As she started to walk back up the stairs, she noticed a bucket with a towel on top. As she removed the towel, nothing could have prepared her for what she would find.
Back To the Beginning
The sequence of events started two nights prior on Monday, February 21, 2022. Taylor Schabusiness and an unnamed friend picked up Pakanich’s son, Shard Thyrion, from his mother’s house in the van of Schabusiness’s roommate. The three of them made a stop to pick up drugs and then went to Schabusiness’s apartment.
At the apartment the three of them smoked cannabis. Schabusiness and Thyrion then smoked methamphetamine. The friend left at an undisclosed time, leaving Schabusiness and Thyrion alone. After the friend was gone, Schabusiness shot up the two of them with Trazadone, an antidepressant – SARI. They then left the apartment and drove to Pakanich’s house in the van. Pakanich’s boyfriend let the two of them in the house sometime late on the 21st to early on the 22nd and went into the basement.
According to Schabusiness, 5 minutes after they arrived Thyrion brought out 2 chains similar to dog choke collars. One he put on himself, the other he gave to her. They were on the bed in the basement, him face down and her on top of him. That’s when Schabusiness started choking him with the chain. She would tell police that choking had been a part of sex acts in the past and, according to her, she didn’t plan to kill him, but she liked it, so she continued chocking him. He tried to fight back. Thyrion took 3-5 minutes to die, according to what Schabusiness told police.
What Happens Next
Schabusiness spent the day of the 22nd in the basement alone with Thyrion’s body. Between 2 and 3 hours of which she spent playing with the body, including performing sex acts it. During the early morning hours of the 23rd that she dismembered the body using knives obtained from the resident’s kitchen. She stated to police that a bread knife worked best because of the serrated blade.
After dismembering the body, she left the house with some of the body parts but, in her words, she couldn’t “believe [she] left the head”. The rest of the body parts she left in the basement in bags she found in the basement. The victim’s torso was left in a storage tote along with three knives. The head was left in a bucket, at the bottom of the stairs, where Thyrion’s mother found it.
Officers Dispatched
Officer Alex Wanish of the Green Bay Police Department was dispatched to the residence at 3:25 a.m. for a report of a severed head being found in a bucket. Pakanich allowed officers into the basement. Officer Wanish went down to the basement where he found a plastic bucket on the floor with a towel over it. As he lifted the towel, he observed a human head inside. Looking around the room, Wanish observed the appearance of dried blood on a mattress.
Officers were sent to the apartment of Taylor Schabusiness after she was identified as the last person to see the victim alive and were made aware of the van seen parked outside Pakanich’s residence and its connection to Schabusiness. Officers would later search the van and find, on top of a laundry basket of clothes, human body parts.
As officers inspected the van, Schabusiness came outside from the apartment building. She has what appears to be dried blood on the front and back of her black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants. Blood was smeared on her hands. Schabusiness is taken into custody and transported to the police station. Detectives observe a cut on her left thumb and scratches on her arms and hands. She claimed the cuts were self-inflicted. Schabusiness was read her rights and interviewed by police.
Schabusiness confirmed that she and Thyrion were alone in the basement. She also told the detectives doing the interview that she kept on choking him because she wanted to see what happens and that she enjoyed chocking him. Then, Schabusiness asked the detectives if they knew what it was like to love something so much that you kill it.
